“Three words are important to me: inspiration, creation and sharing.
Inspiration is why you make a film. The motivation, ideas, circumstances and happenstance that spark a desire and you set to work to make a film.
Creation is how you make the film. What means do you use? What structure? Alone or not alone? In colour or not in colour? Creation is a job.
The third word is sharing. You don’t make films to watch them alone, you make films to show them. Deep down you have to know why you do this job.”
- Agnés Varda on Varda by Agnés, 2019
Inspiration:
“The water was so cold, still she went in, without even thinking about it. I grabbed her towel and went to sit closer where the waves meet the sea, so she could warm up once she came back to land. But she never comes back, because she needs no land to stand. It has always been like this between us two, she would just dive in, no fears and no regrets, and I would stay on the shore in fear that she might drown. But how can she drown if nothing pulls her down? She’s both day and night, inspiration and freedom, life and spirit. Since I remember, even without her noticing, she always knew how to shine.”
- Catarina Gracias, 2020
What inspires me the most? Everyday life, real people. The beach is a place of inspiration, the sea, the sky and the land. A dream.
When I read this poem, it made me think of my sister, about her life choices and unpredictable thoughts, but that no matter how lost she might feel, we always have each other. ‘Filipa’ was born like this.
Creation:
I am taking you on visual journey, that is blurry and shaky at times. From the sea at dawn in south of Portugal up until just after the sunset and, at night in her bedroom with a bright full moon, it is a day following Filipa and, frame by frame you get to know her a little bit more.
The film is accompanied by an original music produced by Pedro Frias, I felt it captured perfectly the balance between being up and down. It is a soft melody that brings nostalgia and takes me home to Portugal.
Sharing:
I am sharing with you a part of our relationship. It is scary to share something this personal but I hope this film makes you think of someone you love and brings you closer to them.
